Château Séraphine, Pomerol 2021

Red | France | Bordeaux | 14% | Full-bodied red

Beautiful dense velvety purple, opaque, really inviting with creamy damson and blue and black skinned fruit on the nose, intense with wood spice. A small amount of Cabernet Franc is included in the blend for the first time, from young vines planted in 2016. Powerful fruit on the palate, spiced with some cinnamon notes, floral and lifted, deep damson and blue fruits on the palate, hints of oak (40% new this year with 5% amphora) but a lovely cool elegance to the wine, clean and fresh on the finish, with light Asiatic spice, fresh and evolving. A satisfying and very fine wine.

At just 2.2 hectares, Château Séraphine is small, even by Pomerol standards, where the average property is around six hectares. Martin Krajewski’s Pomerol adventure, perhaps the inevitable follow-up to his St Emilion incursion at Clos Cantenac, began in 2017 when he bought a couple of plots of land, one on the northern edge of the appellation and the other southwest of the village of Pomerol itself, where the new cellars and château are located. The wines here and at Clos Cantenac are made by Charlotte Krajewski, Martin’s daughter, who honed her skills in South Africa and New Zealand before settling into the Right Bank, bringing a wealth of knowledge to bear in these very traditional sites.
