The Eyrie Vineyards Pinot Noir, Oregon 2021

Red | USA | 13% | Medium-bodied red

Gloriously fresh, vibrant red fruits – strawberry, raspberry, red cherry – with a succulent, mineral palate, this is both ethereally light yet powerfully long on the finish. Just amazing and worth stashing a bottle or two away to see how it evolves, if you can bear it.

In February 1965 David Lett arrived in Oregon with "3,000 grape cuttings and a theory" that stylistically pure Pinot noir could be grown outside of Burgundy. After much research he bought a 20 acre hillside site in the Dundee Hills, 30 miles south west of Portland and made his first vintage in 1970. Lett’s vision was proved a huge success when his Eyrie Vineyards 1975 Pinot noir became the first American wine to compete successfully with the renowned wines of Burgundy (Paris, 1979), something that alarmed Joseph Drouhin so much that he arranged for a rematch the following year which ranked Eyrie a very close second to Drouhin's 1959 Chambolle Musigny Grand Cru. Drouhin jumped on an aeroplane, bought land in Oregon and built his own (very successful) winery. Eyrie had arrived.
