Gevrey Chambertin, Domaine Joseph Roty 2022

Red | France | Burgundy | 13% | Full-bodied red

From various parcels across the appellation, mostly in the middle of the village. Deep and intense in colour with a nose of juicy rich red fruit, grilled and sappy, herby and not as spiced as the Marsannays, leading to a palate of intense dark fruit, again sappy and herby, with big ripe tannins behind, tarry with some grilled oak coming through on swirling and going to a lovely, tightly fruited finish, balanced and dense and truly delicious. Drink 2029 - 2036+

The Domaine has 15 hectares of vines in total, split almost evenly between the communes of Gevrey Chambertin and Marsannay, predominantly planted to Pinot Noir with small amounts of Chardonnay, Pinot Blanc and Aligoté. Farming here combines organic and biodynamic principles (particularly with regard for lunar phases for vineyard work and cellar operations) but the Domaine is certified for neither – Pierre-Jean Roty says they follow what they know rather than adopting new trends.
