Napanook, Dominus Estate, Napa Valley 2019

Red | USA | Napa Valley | 14.5% | Full-bodied red

87% Cabernet Sauvignon, 8% Petit Verdot, 5% Cabernet Franc; 16 months in oak of which 20% new

Deep intense red to the rim with a nose of cool black fruits, closed and almost waxed, with some juicy notes behind, in a very different style to the Othello, leading to a smooth, cool palate with bags of character, layered and complex with plenty of supple ripe tannins behind the fruit, poised and growing in volume, going to a really stylish, structured, long finish. Superb. Drink 2024 – 2030+

When Christian Moueix’s first vintages of Dominus were released, they were outliers with their European-style restraint and understated fruit; fast forward two decades and Napa has caught up with Dominus as growers have throttled back on their huge fruit, tannic structures and punchy alcohol levels, with restraint and freshness now their bywords. Needless to say, the wines from Dominus continue to excel with exactly the same level of class and elegance as previously, and none more so than in 2019, a cooler vintage than many of late. The resulting wines have beautifully cool fruit, freshness and poise and are highly recommended.
