Visiting Domaine Jean Vaudoisey is a breath of fresh air, run as it is by the Poirotte brothers who took over the Domaine from their grandfather whilst in their early 20s. Having lived away from Burgundy for most of their lives, returning for holidays and harvest time, they came to the Domaine with a clean sheet, determined to make the best wines possible from their various plots but without the fettering of history to hold them back. Several of the vineyards were in a poor condition and have had to be replanted, with some coming on stream for the first time this year, notably the Bourgogne Blanc and Monthélie. These are wines which display an understated stroke of genius, with no grand flourishes but just a quiet naturalness which will, I have no doubt, make the Poirotte brothers future stars.

Tasted from barrel, this had not been racked since going into the wood. Deep red black with a very tight nose of black fruits – blackcurrant, even blackberry – not hugely overt, leading to a completely contrasting palate of gorgeous floral notes – roses, violets – and red berry fruit, mineral and almost crunchy, with fine, supple tannins behind and going to a long, rich finish.
