Bourgogne Passetoutgrains, Domaine Fontaine Gagnard 2023

Red | France | Burgundy | 12.5% | Full-bodied red

50% Pinot Noir, 50% Gamay, from lower lying vineyards in Chassagne, aged in old barrels and bottled the summer after harvest. Beautiful limpid pale red with nose of crunchy red fruits, strawberry and some raspberry, a light hint vanilla, redolent of a tarte aux framboises, lightly leafy, leading to a mouth-wateringly fresh palate, juicy and succulent and again this tarte aux framboises note, ripe and fresh, really alluring with light tannins and a bitter cherry note on the end. Easy pleasure. Drink 2025 - 2027

“Racy, well-balanced, zesty Pinot/Gamay blend from vineyards below Chassagne-Montrachet. Lightweight and refreshing. Good value for a burgundy, unfortunately.” Jancis Robinson

The parcellated nature of Burgundy’s vineyards means that whilst one cru may thrive, a neighbouring one may be decimated in its entirety by some weather event, and in 2023 that was to be a focused hail storm which hit Volnay, Meursault and Blagny, ending up over the vineyards which go to Fontaine Gagnard’s rather useful Bourgogne Passetoutgrains, cutting volumes by over 30%. So, when it's gone, it's gone!
