The parcellated nature of Burgundy’s vineyards means that whilst one cru may thrive, a neighbouring one may be decimated in its entirety by some weather event, and in 2023 that was to be a focused hail storm which hit Volnay, Meursault and Blagny, ending up over the vineyards which go to Fontaine Gagnard’s rather useful Bourgogne Passetoutgrains, cutting volumes by over 30%. Céline Fontaine was, Bourgogne Passetoutgrains apart, delighted with her 2023s, the result of a relatively easy growing season which combined good flowering, generous yields, heat and regular rainfall so everything slotted into place.

From 1.5 hectares split across six different parcels lying to the south of Chassagne and down towards Santenay; 20% new oak. Bright ruby red with a more serious nose, tight with hints of raspberry, juicy black fruits, plummy, leading to an equally restrained palate of tart dark fruits, floral and precise with tannins behind, leafy and perfumed and long on the finish.
