Bourgogne Hautes Côtes de Beaune Blanc, Vieilles Vignes, Domaine Jean Chartron 2023

White | France | Burgundy | 13% | Dry, crisp white

One of the Domaine’s larger vineyards at just over 1.05 hectares, close to the village of Nantoux in the hills west of Beaune, formerly including some Pinot Noir but that has now been removed with a view to replanting with Chardonnay once the soil has been rested. Bright with a green glint and a nose of rich citrus fruit, lime cordial with a mineral note. Very lively and fresh on the palate, with hints of green apple and lemon zest, bright with a lovely saline, mineral finish. This always overdelivers! Drink 2025 - 2028

The 14.5 hectares which make up Domaine Jean Chartron are presided over by the fifth generation, Jean-Michel and his sister Anne-Laure Chartron. Their holdings are split over no fewer than 22 different appellations, the majority of which are premier or grand cru sites in Puligny Montrachet, dominated by white wines with one, incredibly rare, red premier cru Puligny. Their philosophy is one of tradition and minimal intervention, and no chemicals have been used in the vineyard since JeanMichel and Anne-Laure took over, preferring instead to use homeopathic treatments and plants which discourage nematode spread to ensure that their vines are as healthy as they can be. Anne-Laure skirted the 2024 conversation by simply mentioning their tiny yields; like many others, she was not prepared to contemplate the ramifications to distribution and pricing until the wines had had a chance to evolve and show what they were made off, despite the small harvest.
