Château Julia Assyrtiko, Drama 2024

White | Greece | Drama | 14% | Dry, fuller-bodied white

The island of Santorini is famed for its Assyrtiko, a juicy, vibrant white grape, but on the mainland, in Greek Macedonia, Château Julia are making a stunning version, taking advantage of the altitude of the vineyards to maintain the natural vivacity of the grape. Made in stainless steel, with no oak, this is vibrant and sherbety with white stone fruits, racy and clean with bright acidity behind, a lovely combination of plumpness allied to zing.

The wonderfully named region of Drama lies in north-eastern Greece, in the Macedonia and Thrace region, and is home to the Château Julia collection of wines. Made from indigenous grapes, these are wines which really have a sense of place, a terroir of mountains, underground springs and long, dry, sunny but cool summers. Our good friend Florent Dumeau consults here (you will have heard his name in connection with Aristea, Clos Cantenac and Château Séraphine).
