Domaine de Laguille Merlot, Rouge de Plaisir, Côtes de Gascogne 2023

Red | France | Regional France | 12.5% | Lighter, fruitier red

We have long been fans of Laguille’s succulently juicy Merlot but with the 2023 it has taken on a new dimension. Have we been swayed by its new packaging, in a Burgundy shaped bottle with a smart new label and a cork rather than screwcap? Perhaps… however, there is no denying its deliciously brambly bright fruit with a lovely herby bite – a real triumph.

“Pleasure by name and by nature: an unoaked, smooth and nicely dry Merlot with juicy black fruit and touches of chocolate and balsam polish. A useful, thoroughly honest wine from southwest France to fill the weekday supper slot.” Joanna Simon www.joannasimon.com

Being relatively close to Bordeaux, the temptation for some is to throw lashings of oak at their Merlot in the hope that it might look a bit like Pomerol. For Guy Vignoli, there is no such temptation as he wants to make an eminently quaffable, highly drinkable – for that is the key – juicy red wine. In his Merlot ‘rouge de plaisir’ he does exactly that.
