Dona Matilde is an old estate in the Douro, with the house and winery sitting majestically on a hill above the river between Régua and Pinhão. The Barros family bought it in 1927 and embarked upon a great renovation and re-planting project. The decision to sell was made in 2006 but Manuel Barros, the founder’s grandson could not bear to see their family jewel in another person’s hands and managed to buy it back within the year. It is run today by Manuel and his youngest son, Filipe. The estate is 98 Ha in size with only about a third planted with old vines, the rest of the estate offering biodiversity with ancient olive groves, citrus and soft fruit orchards, gardens and wild uncultivated woodland.
