Massuria, Bodegas Mas Asturias, Bierzo 2016

Red | Spain | Bierzo | 14% | Full-bodied red

The principal grape is Mencía, which left unchecked will produce large volumes of undistinguished fruit but in the right hands is responsible for amazingly pure, focused wines. José Mas’ Mas Asturias shows just how good it can be – his wines come from old vines and see no new oak, so they have great precision and freshness, almost floral, spiced and beautifully supple.

"Double decanted. Lively crimson. Smooth, very obvious fruit with definite, spicy tang. Lots of fun. Exuberantly fruity but not too sweet." - Jancis Robinson MW, www.jancisrobinson.com October 2022

Bierzo lies slap bang in the middle of the Camino Francés, the most frequented of the various routes to Santiago de Compostela, yet the wines are only now beginning to be known outside the area. The principal grape is Mencía and José Mas, who has worked at many top quality vineyards, including J-P Moueix, is dedicated to proving just how good it can be.

I would buy this wine again!

this is a seriously complex wine. It is so silky and refreshing with dark fruits such as cherry and pomegranate mixed with aromas and flavours of wet slate and liquorice.
